Why You Should Read The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins
Introduction
I have always believed that caring about people means trying to help them, guide them, and sometimes even protect them from making the wrong choices. However, after reading The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins, I started looking at this idea differently. The book introduced me to a very simple phrase: “Let them.” At first, it sounded almost too simple. How could two words change the way I deal with people and difficult situations? But as I continued reading, I began to understand that many of my worries came from trying to control things that were never really under my control. The book helped me understand that I cannot control what people think, say, choose, or feel. I can only control my own response. This idea has changed the way I look at relationships, expectations, stress, and my own happiness.
Learning to Let People Be Themselves
The biggest lesson I took from the book was that I cannot control other people. This sounds obvious, but I realised that I had been trying to do it in many small ways. I would sometimes expect people to behave in the way I thought was right. If someone did not reply to me, I might wonder why. If someone changed their attitude towards me, I might spend a lot of time thinking about what I had done wrong. If someone made a decision that I did not agree with, I might feel that I had to explain why they were making a mistake.
The book made me stop and think about this behaviour. People are allowed to have their own opinions, choices, feelings, and priorities. They do not always have to behave according to my expectations. When someone chooses not to include me, I can let them. When someone does not agree with me, I can let them. When someone wants to live their life differently from me, I can let them.
For me, “let them” does not mean that I should accept disrespect or allow people to hurt me. It means that I should stop wasting my energy trying to force people to change. If someone wants to leave, let them leave. If someone does not understand me, let them. If someone chooses a different path, let them choose it.
This was difficult for me because I sometimes thought that if I cared enough, I could make things work the way I wanted. Now I understand that caring about someone does not mean controlling them. Sometimes the healthiest thing I can do is give people the freedom to show me who they really are.
Letting Go of Expectations
Another important lesson I learned was about expectations. I realised that many disappointments come from expecting people to behave in a certain way. I might do something for someone and secretly expect them to do the same for me. I might be there for someone during a difficult time and expect them to be there for me in exactly the same way. When they do not meet those expectations, I can feel hurt.
Reading the book helped me understand that people do not always think the way I do. They have different personalities, experiences, priorities, and ways of showing care. Expecting everyone to respond like me is unfair to both them and myself.
I started asking myself a simple question: “Did this person actually promise me this, or did I simply expect it?” This question has helped me many times. Sometimes I realise that the person did nothing wrong. I had simply created an expectation in my own mind.
I also learned that letting people be different does not mean that I have to stay in every relationship. If someone's behaviour does not match my values, I can accept that and choose what is best for me. I do not need to convince them to become the person I want them to be.
This has made my relationships feel lighter. I try to appreciate people for what they genuinely give instead of constantly measuring them against what I wish they would give. I still have expectations, but I am learning to communicate them instead of silently expecting people to understand them.
Taking Back Control of My Own Life
The most powerful part of the idea for me was understanding that after “Let them” comes “Let me.” This changed the meaning of the whole theory for me. It is not simply about allowing other people to do whatever they want. It is also about asking myself what I want to do next.
For example, if someone does not invite me somewhere, I can let them. But then I can let myself spend time with people who genuinely want me around. If someone does not support one of my goals, I can let them have their opinion. Then I can let myself continue working towards that goal.
This made me realise that I have more control than I sometimes think. I cannot control another person's actions, but I can control whether I keep thinking about those actions all day. I cannot control whether someone likes me, but I can control how I treat myself. I cannot control whether someone understands my feelings, but I can decide how I communicate and what boundaries I set.
This idea has helped me focus more on my own life. Instead of constantly asking, “Why did they do that?” I try to ask, “What can I do now?” That small change can make a huge difference.
I also started noticing how much mental energy I used on situations that I could not change. I could spend hours thinking about someone's behaviour, but thinking about it would not change anything. Once I accepted that, I felt more peaceful.
“Let me” reminds me that I still have choices. I can walk away. I can speak up. I can forgive. I can set a boundary. I can try again. I can focus on my goals. Most importantly, I can choose not to let another person's behaviour control my entire mood.
Choosing Peace Instead of Constant Worry
Before reading this book, I sometimes thought that worrying about something meant I cared about it. The more I thought about a situation, the more important it seemed. But the book helped me understand that worrying does not always solve a problem. Sometimes it only takes away my peace.
I started applying the “Let them” idea to everyday situations. If someone is talking about me, let them. If someone misunderstands me, let them. If someone does not appreciate what I do, let them. If plans do not happen exactly as I expected, let them. Then I remind myself that I can decide how much attention I give to these things.
This has not made me completely stress-free. I still overthink sometimes. I still get disappointed. I still care about what people think. However, I now recognise when I am trying to control something that I cannot control.
The book also changed the way I see personal boundaries. I used to think that keeping peace meant keeping everyone happy. Now I understand that real peace sometimes comes from accepting that someone may be unhappy with me. I do not have to change every decision just because another person does not like it.
For me, this is one of the hardest but most valuable lessons. I want to be kind, but I also want to protect my own peace. I want to care about people without losing myself in their opinions and reactions.
Conclusion
Reading The Let Them Theory did not suddenly solve all my problems, but it gave me a simple way to look at them differently. The biggest lesson I took from the book is that I do not need to control everyone or every situation to have a good life. People will make their own choices, and sometimes those choices will disappoint me. I cannot stop that from happening. What I can control is what I do next.
The words “let them” have become a reminder for me to stop chasing explanations, forcing relationships, and worrying about things outside my control. At the same time, “let me” reminds me that my life is still in my hands. I can choose my response, my boundaries, my goals, and my peace.
After reading this book, I believe that letting go is not giving up. Sometimes, it is actually choosing myself. When I stop trying to control everyone around me, I have more time and energy to focus on becoming the person I want to be. And for me, that is the real value of the Let Them Theory.
