For over a decade, social media has impacted how individuals communicate, articulate their expression, and interact with the world. What once seemed exciting and full of promise now seems overwhelming for those who are undertaking never ending cycles of scrolling, comparing, and reacting. As a result, an increasing number of individuals are opting to walk away from social media for good. This phenomenon has been identified as a digital escape, a manifestation of an underlying shift occurring in how individuals perceive technology and their place within it. This is anything but a fleeting phenomenon, but the culmination of years of built-up pressure and a quest for something of greater meaning than what is found within the screen.

One of the greatest difficulties of being part of a connected society is the incessant flow of notifications. Messages, updates, and notifications require responses all day long, thereby creating a sense of urgency that never really ends. This is an opportunity cost, where individuals feel they must immediately reply to a message or keep up with an update in case they fall behind. Something exciting to begin with gradually becomes a chore on their plates. This is the case with many people who decide to walk away from social networking.

Another major factor for this change over to social media platforms is the effects of social media on one’s mental health. There has been ample evidence that proves that overuse of social media has led to anxiety, depression, feelings of loneliness, and low self-esteem. Social media platforms that promote pictures of perfection often lead to feelings of inadequacy or failure for social media users. Such an image of life can misguide one's image of themselves and cause pressure to adapt to these unrealistic expectations of life. In turn, individuals wonder if it’s worth being connected when it has such adverse effects. Toxicity is another factor that makes consumers drift apart. Online platforms, envisioned as support communities, have instead become battlefields where disputes, attacks, controversies, and negativity thrive. Many people have reported feeling drained as they engage with online platforms, not as a consequence of their own activities but as a result of the negativity they observe. Ironically, the more time users spend on social media, the more they can become disengaged with the world around them. Though these exchanges are certainly convenient, they cannot provide the substance and intimacy that exists when a person is actually in a space with others. Families are gathered together, but they are not communicating with each other, and the same is true for their relationships with friends. They are more likely to document being with each other than to actually spend time together, which has left many people with hundreds or thousands of connections feeling isolated.

A third cause of this "digital escape" is that social media sites are addictive. The sites are created in such a way that users never really finish viewing content. Every "like" and "comment," and even every message alert, sends a "reward signal" that reinforces continued use. Many users find that they end up spending much more time online than they thought they were going to, even before they actually realize how much time is being spent. It can be very hard to "kick the habit," and it ends up leaving users feeling frustrated and like they no longer control what they are doing. When a person realizes this, however, they simply opt out.

Issues with regard to privacy and exploitation are also a part. Over the years, there has been growing awareness amongst users with regards to how their data is being utilized. The social media websites have been monitoring all activities right from the time a visitor opens the page. These activities range from the visitor’s browsing history to even private messages. Not everyone feels very comfortable with the knowledge that he or she is being observed all the time. Breaches and instances where social media has been manipulated have only served to make things worse. Taking a step back is a very wise option in a world where a person’s private data is being converted into a commodity.

In the midst of the pressure, negativity, and privacy issues, a longing for simplicity has sprung up. People are now more conscious about how they spend their time and where they put their focus. This shift towards a minimalist and mindful living encourages people to get rid of the things that plague them with distractions, but do not add anything to the improvement of their own lives. Social media, with its too-much-to-handle information overload and never-ending pressures, finds itself at the top of the list of things people want to give away. Everything is a lot simpler without having to monitor each trend, reply to each message, or share each moment. The decision to abandon the use of social media is not always easy, especially considering the importance that these media have in contemporary society. Individuals fear being cut off from friends, opportunities, and being left behind in society.

But individuals who choose to abandon the use of the media find out that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. They realize the time they had been losing. They get involved in hobbies, nature, and more time to read, and they do things that give them a sense of fulfillment in life. They develop stronger relationships since they are more involved in more meaningful conversations. They become clearer in their minds since they are not exposed to the negativity that comes from the media every day. The most important thing, though, is that they are able to understand more about themselves, away from the effects of digital comparisons. This phenomenon does not necessarily indicate that people want to shun technology completely.

Rather, it symbolizes a need to strike a balance. The aim is not to knock down technological advancement but to use it more healthily and thoughtfully. This is either a temporary or a permanent withdrawal from the digital world. However, the key point here is that people have understood that mental health and happiness should be of prime importance rather than digital fame. As more individuals begin questioning their relationship with social media, society is seeing the beginning of a movement towards healthier online practices. The future might see more intentional use of technology and the prioritization of quality over quantity. In this new era, abandoning social media means moving from being disconnected from the world to reconnecting with life.
