Some places I save because I genuinely want to visit them. Then there are places I save because something about them makes me imagine myself there. These five belong to the second group. I found them while exploring Sri Lanka’s southern coast online, moving from photographs to travel pages, restaurant discoveries and those little corners that suddenly make you stop scrolling.

What attracted me was never just the food. It was the feeling surrounding each place: cliffs above the ocean, sand beneath your feet, palms moving in the breeze, rooftops glowing at sunset and evenings that seem too beautiful to hurry through.

I have not visited these places yet, and I do not want to pretend otherwise. This is my personal travel wishlist, made from the places that have caught my attention and the experiences I imagine having there. I wanted five coastal spots that feel like more than somewhere to eat or sleep. I wanted places I could remember as part of a journey.

The Cliff Weligama was the first place that really stayed in my mind. I came across photographs of its position above the Indian Ocean, and I immediately understood why I kept looking at them. The restaurant sits on a cliff top in Kapparathota, Weligama, giving the sea and horizon a dramatic presence.

There is something about eating above the ocean that feels different from simply eating beside it. I imagine arriving before sunset, finding a good seat and watching the sky slowly change while the waves continue below. Then, hopefully, I would put my phone away and actually enjoy the view.

The Cliff feels like the place I would choose for a special evening. I would not want to squeeze it between ten other activities. I would plan around sunset, arrive without rushing and let dinner become part of the experience.

If The Cliff is about looking at the ocean from above, La Belle Ahangama is about being right beside it. That contrast is one reason I love having both on the same wishlist.

La Belle sits directly on the sand in Ahangama and has the kind of relaxed beachfront setting I associate with the perfect southern coast evening. Its atmosphere, beach seating, seafood, drinks and laid back character make me imagine a visit with absolutely no desire to check the time.

I would arrive in the late afternoon while the beach is still bright. I would sit close to the water, order something simple and stay longer than I planned. Then sunset would arrive, and suddenly leaving would feel like a terrible idea.

This is the place I imagine as the barefoot chapter of my trip. No complicated plans, no rushing from one attraction to another, just sand, sea, food and the sound of people enjoying themselves.

What makes La Belle especially attractive to me is that it seems designed for lingering. I like places where a quick lunch can quietly turn into an entire evening. If I ever visit, I would want to experience that transition for myself rather than simply photograph it.

Lean@83 attracted me for a completely different reason. It does not give me the same dramatic first impression as The Cliff. Instead, it feels like the sort of place another traveler might casually mention, leaving me wondering how I had never heard of it before.

Located around the Kabalana area of Ahangama, close to Kabalana Beach, it has an open air, tropical atmosphere that feels suited to a relaxed evening. The combination of Sri Lankan food, drinks, greenery and a social atmosphere makes me imagine the place becoming livelier as the sun goes down.

I would probably visit Lean@83 after spending the day exploring Kabalana. I can imagine arriving with my hair still carrying a little sea breeze, ordering a drink, trying some local food and simply watching the evening unfold.

Teddies Ahangama gives my wishlist another kind of coastal experience. Instead of sitting directly on a beach or looking down from a dramatic cliff, I would be enjoying the view from a rooftop in the middle of Ahangama.

The rooftop cafe is the part that caught my attention. There is something lovely about a place that does not seem limited to one particular moment of the day.

I could imagine going there in the morning for coffee, spending the afternoon exploring Ahangama, then returning later when the light becomes softer. If the evening turned into dinner or drinks under the stars, I would not complain.

Teddies feels like the place for a day when I do not want to chase a checklist. I would rather sit, look around, watch the town move below me and let the day happen naturally.

That is what I find attractive about travel in the first place. Sometimes the best memories are not created by doing something extraordinary. They come from sitting somewhere beautiful with nowhere else you urgently need to be.

The fifth place is slightly different, and that is exactly why I kept it. Lighthouse Ahangama Hotel is a boutique beachfront stay in Goviyapana, with private beach access, a garden cafe and a rooftop Stairway Cafe.

The rooftop especially caught my attention because it is presented as a place to enjoy sunset, drinks and food while looking out towards the coast. At the same time, the Garden Cafe offers a quieter setting close to the waves.

This is the place I imagine choosing when I want the trip to become slower. I can picture waking up near the sea, having a peaceful morning, doing very little during the afternoon and then heading upstairs before sunset.

There is something appealing about a coastal stay where the surroundings themselves become part of the holiday.

Lighthouse feels like the quiet chapter of my wishlist, the place where I would give myself permission to stop checking the time.

If I ever turn this wishlist into a real journey, I would not try to rush through all five. Even though they are connected to Sri Lanka’s southern coast, I would want each place to have its own moment.

The Cliff would be my planned sunset evening in Weligama. La Belle would be my beach day that naturally becomes dinner. Lean@83 would fit into a casual evening after exploring Kabalana. Teddies would be my slow rooftop stop in Ahangama. Lighthouse would be the peaceful stay where I could step away from a busy schedule.

Before visiting, I would also check recent reviews, opening times, prices and whether reservations are needed. Beautiful photographs can create high expectations, so I would rather know what the current experience is actually like.

I do not want to arrive late, eat quickly, take two photographs and leave. If I travel all the way to the southern coast, I want to give myself time to notice the small things: the sound of the waves, the changing light, the food on the table, the people around me and the feeling of being somewhere unfamiliar.

I also know that the reality may surprise me, and that is part of the excitement. A place can look beautiful online but feel different in person. Maybe one will become my favorite for a reason I cannot predict yet. I would rather leave room for that surprise than decide everything before I arrive. That uncertainty is part of why I want to experience them myself too.

That is probably the real reason these places caught my attention.

Some travel plans begin with a flight ticket. Mine often begin with a photograph that makes me stop scrolling.

The Cliff Weligama was one of those photographs. Then came Ahangama, Kabalana and the idea of following the southern coast slowly, one beautiful place at a time.

For now, these five places are still wishes in my travel diary. And honestly, I like that they are.
